Maine County Jails and Gardening

The Bangor Daily News ran an online article on September 3, 2007 entitled "Inmates tending their own gardens". The Penobscot County Jail has a garden where about 30 inmates spend some of their time working on a 1-acre plot. For every 16 hours an inmate works in the garden, his sentence is reduced by 24 hours. The vegetables are used to help feed prisoners. In times past almost every jail or prison had a garden and kept animals.
