E-Verify and Identity Theft
One cause of identity theft is the use of someone elses' identity to obtain a job (usually using someone's social security number). The government has been quietly rolling out a system called E-Verify. It is a database program that combines the records from the Social Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security in an effort to determine worker eligibility. Employers can sign up to use this program on a volunteer basis. Some see the program as an effective way to stop illegal immigration and identity theft. Others see it as a stepping on individual and privacy rights. Read more in a recent news article - "E-Verify gaining a bigger role in hiring", Houston Chronicle, June 25, 2008.
