Shaken Baby Cases in Maine

The number of shaken baby cases in Maine has risen according to statistics kept by Maine hospitals. The cases have risen by three times. Four homicide deaths last year were children under the age of 18 months. Some professionals are attributing the recent rise to the stresses of young families dealing with the recession and other accompanying problems. Maine health professionals have launched a program to help out young parents and they are calling it the "Period of Purple Crying" campaign. Read a recent news posting on this topic in "Effort targets violence against infants", Portland Press Herald, May 31, 2009.
