Rogue Scientists Feared at US Biotechnology Laboratories
The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee recently held a hearing to consider legislation introduced that would implement recommendations by the Commission on on the Prevention of Weapons of Mass Destruction Proliferation and Terrorism. The bill would provide the authority for the DHS to set security standards at biotechnology laboratories. The fear is that a rogue scientist working either alone as a "lone wolf" or on behalf of a domestic or foreign terrorist group would develop a device capable of delivering a bioterrorism agent on a wide-spread basis.
