172nd Infantry Home for Christmas

A Maine National Guard unit based in Brewer, Maine is home for Christmas for a short time.  The 150 members of Bravo Company, 3rd Battalion, 172nd Infantry of the Maine Army National Guard is currently mobilized and on active duty at Camp Atterbury, Indiana in preparation for deployment overseas to Iraq for one year.  The Soldiers were provided with a few days off during Christmas but there was no way for them to return home.  An organization called Operation Community Support - a military assistance non-profit group - provided the funds for two buses to travel the round-trip (15 hours one way) from Camp Atterbury to Maine to bring the Soldiers home for Christmas.  The bulk of the funds were provided by Stephen King - the Maine book author.  Read the entire news article at "Kings paying way home for Maine troops", Bangor Daily News, December 12, 2009.
