Reports from Maine Army National Guard Unit in Afghanistan
Bill Nemitz, a reporter from the Portland Press Herald, is spending some time with a Maine Army National Guard unit in Afghanistan. The unit, Bravo Company, 3rd Battalion, 172nd Mountain Infantry is stationed in eastern Afghanistan along the Pakistan border. Their mission is to control the flow of insurgents across the Pakistan-Afghan border, train and advise the Afghan National Security forces, and work with the civilian population to gain their support of the Afghan central government. All of these missions are formidable. The Soldiers home for one year is called COP Dand wa Patan about 35 miles east of Gardez, Afghanistan. They will not return to Maine until mid-November.
