Troop Greeter Bill Knight Died on Christmas Day
A Maine troop greeter, Bill Knight, passed away at age 91 on Christmas Day. Bill had met troops returning from overseas deployments (many from Iraq and Afghanistan) at Banger International Airport in Maine. A great majority of the troop transports (C5As and C17s) would stop at Banger for refueling. Bangor airport is the home of the 101st Air Refueling Wing of the Maine Air National Guard. Bill played one of the starring roles in a documentary produced in 2009 entitled "The Way We Get By" - a film about the Maine troop greeters. The Maine Troop Greeters have met almost every single plane returning from Iraq or Afghanistan carrying troops home in more than a decade.
