Arming Maine Forest Rangers

A task force was established by Governor LePage to recommend whether forest rangers should be allowed to carry firearms. The task force agreed that rangers need protection and that they should be armed. The cost of the initiative will be expensive - because of training and purchase of weapons. The training would likely take place at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy. Equipment that may be purchased includes firearms, ammunition, bulletproof vests, and cleaning kits. The legislature is considering LD 297 to authorize the funding for the arming of the forest rangers. The Portland Press Herald recently published an editorial endorsing the task force recommendations. See "Our View: Maine forest rangers shouldn't face hazards unarmed" dated January 15, 2014.
